RIM Material System
Our parts are molded in two different rigid self-skinning RIM systems:
- DOW Voracor CS 996 / CE 125: 3mm minimum wall thickness to be U.L. 94-V0 rated
- DOW Voracor CS 984 / CE 123: 6mm minimum wall thickness to be U.L. 94-V0 & 94-5VA rated
Both RIM systems are proprietary mixes, designed specifically for the molding of rigid cosmetic covers and electromechanical equipment enclosures. The U.L. file number E76646 is shared by both RIM systems.
Wall Thickness
- A minimum of 3mm (0.118”) or 6mm (0.236”) wall thickness, depending on the system, must generally be applied to maintain the U.L. rating
- Small, isolated areas can be molded as thin as 2mm (0.080”) and as thick as 25mm (1.00”)
- Due to the absence of sink lines in the RIM molding process, parts can be designed with both thick and thin walled areas
Draft Angles
- Ideally 1° draft on outside cosmetic walls and 2° draft on inside walls
- Limited areas of 0° draft can be accomplished with the use of removable core pieces
Bosses
- A typical boss with a 6-32 threaded insert should be about 0.500” at the top
- Draft angles of 1 to 2 degrees per side
Undercuts
- Undercuts can be achieved by using removable aluminum core pieces
Radii & Fillets
- Ideal edge radii is a minimum of 1mm (0.039”)
- Ideal internal fillet is a minimum of 3.2mm (0.125”)
Threaded Inserts
- All threaded inserts are molded-in, ensuring repetitive location and excellent pull-out strength
- We maintain a complete inventory of both metric and standard brass inserts, with stainless steel available upon request
Over Molding
- Mold tools can often be designed to accommodate the over molding of secondary hardware and components i.e. – stand-offs, magnets, small sheet metal brackets, etc.
Recommended Tolerances
METRIC
- 0.X = +/- 0.5mm up to 127mm, add 0.05mm per 25.4mm over 127mm
- 0.XX = +/- 0.25mm up to 127mm, add 0.025mm per 25.4mm over 127mm
ENGLISH
- 0.XX = +/- 0.020” up to 5.00”, add 0.002” per inch over 5.00”
- 0.XXX = +/- 0.010” up to 5.00”, add 0.001” per inch over 5.00”
